Fireball streaks across Prairies

I saw one of those a long time ago in New Jersey (just a guess, but maybe 12 years old). I was walking home at night from a friends house and it came almost directly overhead from east to west. It was fast, made a roaring sound and seemed so close. I watched it go to the horizon and ran all the way home.
