Seeking God's Face

But you, when you pray, enter into your room. And shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly. - Matthew 6:6

"God is in secret. He is hidden from the world. The world does not see Him, neither knows Him. You can never reach God in your prayers unless you shut out the world. Shutting the door means something more than closing the door of your literal closet. Persons may enter the literal closet and close the door, and yet have the world in their hearts and thoughts. Such have not closed the door in the true sense."

--Charles Ebert Orr, How to Live a Holy Life
The Kindle version of that book is free - can't beat that.

The world, not seeing God or knowing God, but hearing about Him only - and mostly lies at that - reject what they hear. They are angry because they do not understand why a loving God could allow so much suffering in the world. If He exists, why doesn't He do something, why doesn't He intervene? And rejecting what they do not understand, they have decided to take matters into their own hands. They will intervene, they will control you, they will make you act like they think you should. By any means necessary. But it never works, it cannot work.
