France wants America to sink in a quagmire there in the crazy hope that a weakened U.S. will pave the way for France to assume its "rightful" place as America's equal, if not superior, in shaping world affairs."

Tuesday I finished the installation of my water softener and it worked great. That night I went to get in my car and the driveway was wet, like it had been raining, but only part of the driveway. Then I noticed it was coming from the garage. Great! I went in the garage and water was everywhere, it was coming from the water softener. I closed the valves to bypass the softener and went to work so I wouldn't be late, wondering what could possibly be wrong. When I got home I looked at it and it turned out to be a cracked connector at the inlet. I guess I tightened it a bit too much. I replaced the connector and it is working great now.

A Turn For The Worst

More Handyman Stuff

Monday, between everything else I had to do, I installed the water softener. I had a leak in a threaded fitting and had to take that section apart again and I have to stop at Home Depot on the way home to pick up a couple of more parts. Today it will be up and working. It really isn't hard to do but it's so hot in the garage and I have to watch James and make sure he keeps out of trouble. Alot of interuptions.

We got a new reservations computer at work and I was volunteered to set it up. No problem, it's done, but I don't know the codes to connect with central reservations. That will have to wait.

Some Downloads For Mom's New Computer

If you didn't do it already go to Windows Update and download all critical updates. Don't wait.

Now, download and install the free version of ZoneAlarm. The standard ZoneAlarm will be fine and it's free. Just click where it says download. After you download it, click on it and follow the directions. It should start automatically at startup and don't surf the web without it.

Then get Ad-Aware. Click where it says download in the last paragraph. After downloading, click on it to install. After you finish going on the web run ad-aware and follow the directions to remove what it says you have.

Another program I really like is Spybot Search and Destroy. It's similar to Ad-Aware but I think better. It is more complicated. I would still download it though, look at the program after you install it and call me if you have any questions.

I gave you Password Corral on you old computer so download it if you used it. (To save and organize all the passwords you collect on different websites) The download link is down toward the bottom. I don't know why you wouldn't use it.

One more thing, download DCOMbobulator and run it. It's very easy. Shut off DCOM. You only have to run it once to shut it off. Thanks to #!/usr/bin/geek for the heads up on this tool.

Don't forget to run the anti-virus regularly. Don't open attachments.

Handy Man

Tuesday I installed a new laundry room door. The old one was a normal door that swung into the room and took up the whole room. The new one is a folding door and it opens out. Wow, the difference is amazing! There is room to actually move around in there and fold clothes. Now we need to decide whether to paint it or stain it.

I also installed new blinds in the living room. Finally got rid of the old mini-blinds. The new one is light oak and really makes a huge difference in the feel of the room. Now if only the kids will leave it alone and not break it.

And a new toilet seat for the main bathroom. Irma got one that has shells molded into it. It does look alot nicer.

eBay

I put up a couple of new auctions. I use Turbo Lister and on the second auction it wouldn't let me upload it because eBay couldn't recognize the links for the pictures. I checked and rechecked, tried this and that - no luck. Finally I just copied the main html and deleted the auction and started over. It worked. Thank you to whoever invented the copy/paste commands.

I'm happy with the sales so far on eBay. I have alot more to list but it's slow going. James likes to help too much and if he's not helping, if
I stay too long on the computer, he wants me to get off and play with him. Irma had me take pictures of some jewelry she wants to sell but she didn't give me the information I need to write a description.

I have some rare magazines I've been thinking of selling. Thinking because they are worth something to me and I don't want them to sell too cheap. The magazine is called Gmund (it's about Porsche automobiles) and it was published in the late 70's and early 80's by the same company that publishes Cavallino. They've been in storage all this time. Maybe I'll put a reserve on them. But should I sell them all together or seperately? Decisions, decisions.

AAA To The Rescue

I have had the same experience with them (the taking a long time, not the slaying) and they are just about worthless to me. Who wants to sit for hours waiting for a tow truck, especially in the Florida heat. And many times your broken down in the middle of nowhere.

Home Depot - Hardware Store?

I went to Home Depot Monday to get some parts to install a water softener. I found almost everything but I need a checkvalve and couldn't find one. I asked an employee and he told me they didn't have any, "I don't know why we don't carry them but they are available in any good hardware store." Oh. You mean, like, Lowe's.

I didn't make that up, he really said that.

James update

James went to the doctor today and like I said, He's no longer sick. I didn't go because I had to pick up Joshua from school but Irma said the doctor gave him a clean bill of health. Later, Irma told me James had a prescription to get. "A prescription for what?" I asked, "If she said he wasn't sick why does he need a prescription?" She said it was for congestion. We talked about it and we'll watch James, obviously, but I don't think we'll get the medicine. What's the point? Maybe she gets kickbacks.

I have a catalog from Mo Hotta Mo Betta and on the cover there is a cartoon of a guy holding a habenero pepper up to his mouth and next to it the same guy holding the pepper but his head is burnt to a crisp. James was looking at it and asked why his head was like that. I said one picture was before eating the pepper and the other picture was after eating the pepper. "Oh" he said, "but he didn't eat the pepper."

David Horowitz has a great commentary out today: How To Look At The War On Terror

The enemy understands the war we are in. It knows that it is fighting for its life in Iraq. In sabotaging the peace in Iraq, its aim is to intimidate America and force our retreat. In his Memorial Day speech, the President addressed this threat: “Retreat in the face of terror would only invite further and bolder attacks. There will be no retreat.”

I shudder to think what will happen if President Bush is voted out of office next election. I believe it just may spell the end of the United States of America as we know it.

I know the liberals believe they are on a higher plane of understanding, that their minds are expanded and open to truth, knowledge, love, peace and oneness. They are the Vulcans to the conservative Klingons. The problem with their thinking is it's very easy to think yourself into corners and crevices that have no basis in reality, but they become your reality. The more people get together around an idea the more real it becomes to them. They are perfectly willing to walk right into (and take the country with them) a pride of lions and wonder at their beauty, completely denying the danger. After all, we'll mean them no harm. See, we're not armed.

Change the subject

James started to get a fever Friday afternoon. This kid rarely gets sick so it surprised me. I gave him extra Seasilver and some children's Tylenol. He was still playing with Joshua but they both were in his bed. He didn't get worse and was only slightly less active than normal all evening. Still, you could tell he was sick. We went to bed and around 11:30pm or so he woke up and was obviously feeling bad. He cried and moaned. He wanted more Seasilver (he likes it) so I gave him that and didn't want more medicine, but he got it anyway. We gave him children's Advil - it lasts for 8 hours. He fell asleep again and slept throught the night. The next morning he felt alot better but not quite normal. I gave him his vitamins again. Irma called the doctor and she said give him some Triaminic (for congestion). He was really looking much better but we got the medicine and gave him some. That was pretty much it. He's been completely normal since. Irma wants to take him to the doctor Monday (today) just to be sure, but he's fine.

It's a terrible feeling when your kid is sick.

eBay Fraud

If you are buying something for $2200.00 on eBay you really need to use Escrow.com. Ask the seller first, if he says no or will only use a strange escrow company you never heard of, or tries to talk you into some other way of sending the money, stay away - do not bid on the auction. There is no reason an honest seller wouldn't allow the use of escrow for something so expensive if you paid for the service. Especially in the fraud-ridden computer section of eBay. eBay is really a safe way to buy but you do need to keep your eyes open and pay attention to warning signs - if it doesn't feel right pass on the auction. There will always be another.

If you go into, say, the Mac Powerbook section of eBay and just watch, get a feel for what's there, you'll begin to get a good handle on the fraudulent auctions. You will see some of the auctions disappear as eBay catches on to some of them and deletes them. You'll start to recognize the sellers that have been selling for a while and watch the feedback to see how his/ her buyers react, how long the transactions take. Do your homework before buying anything expensive on eBay. That's my two cents.

The U.S. is being attacked from within and without, and we're rotting away spiritually so we don't have the combination of moral compass, strength and perseverance to withstand it.

Even Harder To Understand

I was reading a commentary in the Osceola News-Gazette by Carl Hiaasen (columnist for the Miami Herald) called He was only following God’s orders — so he says and came across this paragraph:

"Ironically, Bush is a long-time opponent of abortion. He’s also a supporter of capital punishment. Being simultaneously pro-life and pro-death isn’t easy to explain, but plenty of conservatives — including the governor’s older brother — take that position."

Why is that so difficult to understand? On the one hand you have an innocent, defenseless, precious child and on the other you have a murderer. I'd say that's quite a difference. What does he think? If you are pro-life you should believe no one should ever die and if you are pro-death you believe every one should die regardless of whether they are guilty or innocent?

The same God who said Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill (which is actually Thou shalt do no murder, Matthew 19:18. The Hebrew word is Ratsach), also said Exodus 21:12 He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.

Even if you leave God out of the subject entirely the difference between taking an innocent life and capital punishment for murder is abundantly clear.

Palestine

The truth is that Palestine is no more real than Never-Never Land. The first time the name was used was in 70 A.D. when the Romans committed genocide against the Jews, smashed the Temple and declared the land of Israel would be no more. From then on, the Romans promised, it would be known as Palestine. The name was derived from the Philistines, a Goliathian people conquered by the Jews centuries earlier. It was a way for the Romans to add insult to injury. They also tried to change the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina, but that had even less staying power.

Palestine has never existed -- before or since -- as an autonomous entity. It was ruled alternately by Rome, by Islamic and Christian crusaders, by the Ottoman Empire and, briefly, by the British after World War I. The British agreed to restore at least part of the land to the Jewish people as their homeland.

There is no language known as Palestinian. There is no distinct Palestinian culture. There has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc. Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth of 1 percent of the landmass.

But that's too much for the Arabs. They want it all. And that is ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today. Greed. Pride. Envy. Covetousness. No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make, it will never be enough.

James loves to go to the playground but they took the canopy from the one I usually take him to. I thought they would replace it with a new one but apparently not. They put up signs saying the playground equipment may get hot. May get hot? Do they know this is Florida? The playground is completely useless except before 11am. The sign should read "Caution: Using playground during daylight hours may result in 3rd degree burns." What are they thinking?

Cancer

A friend of mine has been undergoing chemo-therepy for Hodgkin's Disease. He seemed to be doing well, the doctors were pleased with his progress. He handled it well, even joking about it, although it hasn't been easy for him. He began having pain in the kidney area and he had a stint put in. I don't know if I spelled that right, I'm not even 100% sure what it is. He was to have it removed but during that operation they said they had to remove the kidney. There was a mass surrounding it, they couldn't remove it, but they took the kidney. I don't know every detail, it was a very confusing thing. It wasn't expected. So he had been home recovering and a few days ago began having extreme back pain. The doctor who took out the kidney said it was all in his head, gave him a letter stating he was well enough to return to work and basically said he just didn't want to return to work. He went to a chiropractor and was told something was wrong, the area was all red and the chiropractor wouldn't touch him. On his way back to the car he had shooting pains, he said like static electricity, in his legs and they began to give out. He fell. He got up and fell again. They took him to a different doctor who did an MRI and said there was a tumor attached to his spinal cord and he needed an emergency operation. They said if he had waited a couple more days he would have lost use of his legs. They looked at the previous MRI's and said the tumor was obvious and the other doctor should have easily seen it. Legal action a possibility.

He just called me tonight from the hospital, sometimes in tears, telling me about it. He didn't sound like himself at all. It's really hard to deal with. He's the same age as I am. I'm not really sure what to say or do. I'm going to visit him tomorrow. His plans are to leave the hospital and go back on chemo again. Right now he can't even walk so I don't think he'll be leaving the hospital very soon. Let's see.

I wonder what I would do if I were in his shoes. I always say when the time comes, that's it. I don't want to prolong it and suffer the indignities of operation after operation and all that goes with that. I don't want to do everything possible to eek out every possible miserable moment of living that way. I wouldn't want my son seeing that either. But then, I want to be there to watch him grow up. My friend doesn't have a wife or children. I think he wishes he had.

When I went to work last night there were 3 sandhill cranes in the field next to the hotel standing in a puddle not 10 feet from the driveway. 2 were sleeping with their heads tucked under their wing and the other was, apparently, standing guard. They were there all night.

Powerbook Hinges

One of the hinges on my powerbook broke last week. I started searching the internet to get it fixed and learned that Mac wanted $1600.00 to fix it. If I was Bill Gates I wouldn't pay that much on principal. Supposedly, they have to replace the whole frame. No thank you!

I found another place that said they could do it for about $400.00. Better, but $400.00 for a hinge? Come on. One site described how a guy fixed his hinge with a piece of sheet aluminum but I learned that it didn't last very long. I gave serious thought to just leaving it broken.

I finally thought to check eBay and found a (somewhat) reasonable pair of hinges, bid on them, and won. I also found a source for a new hinge for about $150.00. I paid less for both sides and I'll sell the other on eBay.

Fixing it took about 15 minutes. It was alot easier than I thought it would be. The hardest part was prying the screen shell apart at the hinge to remove it because it is glued. I used a tiny screwdriver very carefully and reglued it with gel crazy glue. There is only a slight ripple where it was repaired, hard to see, and I can live with that. If you do it, completely remove the screen at both ends so you don't break the other hinge by twisting it.

Mac CD Burning Blues

I tried to burn some cd's yesterday on my powerbook and it would cancel the burn and give an unknown error 0x80020022. I looked on the internet for some help but found only a few people with the same problem but no answer. The Mac website didn't mention the problem exactly but it did say if you were having problems burning cd-r's to try changing the brand. I found a different kind and tried it tonight and it works great. So the problem was the powerbook doesn't like Sony cd-r's. How strange.

They say it's luck, most think it's luck, but I know that God has put a hedge around this country. He's given it a little push here, protection there. Not the all out blessings and protection He promises for obeying Him but enough to fulfill His purposes.

There is a connection between what is happening to this country, all the problems we're having on every front and this. It's not a popular opinion, I know. I'm not going to try to change the direction this country is going. It's not for me to do. God is not trying to save the world now. But He is warning us.

Are we in the end time? No ones opinion can cause it or stop it. We are or we aren't and it's up to each individual to decide for themselves and take whatever action they deem necessary. You are ultimately responsible for you own actions, regardless of what the court system says.

Just for the record, I don't hold anyone's opinion about this against them, I'm not trying to convert anyone. You're not gonna burn in hell for all eternity if you make the wrong choice (what kind of merciful God would do that?) and I'm not gonna call you names or anything silly like that. It is what it is. This is America after all and thank God for that!

I picked up a prescription for Irma yesterday. I can't believe how much it cost, even with insurance. Then she started telling me about all the side effects and how she gets sick taking them. That's OK with the FDA though. The drug companies make big money selling this stuff and enough makes it into the pockets of decision makers, one way or the other, to make all the side effects go away. Just don't try to sell vitamins and tell people it may help them. That's a major offence, you become the scourge of society! We wouldn't want too many healthy people walking around not buying drugs.

Irma has worked for doctors for a long time now and you would not believe how much the drug companies give the doctors and employees trying to gain favor. Huge lunches for all (several times a week), catered by The Lobster House or various other restaurants in the area. Not to mention the little give away toys and fancy pens and free samples. We went to a dinner paid for by one company at TGIF, all the employees and their entire families, order anything you want...all free courtesy of prescription drugs. Imagine what they do for the important people in Washington.

My Taskbar

In a previous post I told you my taskbar was too large and wouldn't adjust smaller. The icons were too large and I think that's why. Anyway, I created a new user account and deleted the old one and it solved the problem. Since it was a fresh install I didn't have to fiddle with it too much. That's better.

James used the word awesome correctly in a sentence today, much to my amazement. He must have learned it from Joshua. We went to the pet shop to buy mice and rats for the snakes. I usually buy them at the flea market because they are so cheap but I was too tired to go when they were open last weekend. They cost about 3 times as much, I hate that. James loves to go to the pet shop and he likes to carry the mice too. He got all excited in the store and kept saying he saw a frog so I had to go with him so he could show me. He took me to a pool they had on the floor and the frog turned out to be ceramic. How anticlimactic. We got home just before a major thunderstorm hit and fed the snakes. Awesome.

It's hard to say how much these new created diamonds will effect the price of natural diamonds but you can be sure there will be those who will pass them off as high quality natural diamonds.

Created colored stones have been around awhile and are big business these days. They are beautiful and make gorgeous jewelry but high quality natural stones maintain value in spite of this. Natural colored stones have inclusions which can but don't necessarily detract value. These inclusions can have a beauty all their own, they tell a story, like looking back in time to the formation of the stone (even if you can't see them by eye). People are more willing to pay for the natural stone because of this. The beautiful, flawless created stone is too beautiful for it's own good (some manufacturers are creating colored stones with inclusions to further confuse you).

Inclusions in diamonds always detract value and are just plain ugly. Will the diamond industry be able to convince people to pay more for a mined diamond when they can get a more perfect but created diamond for less? Time will tell.

I was searching through some Windows XP tip sites and ran across an article that claims: Win-XP kills Verizon DSL. If I had Verizon DSL (Kat) I would check this setting he talks about to be on the safe side. It may keep it from happening again.

Smiley Face

James was looking out the back door for the moon, but it was cloudy. Suddenly, he shouts, "Hey, a smiley face!" I looked to see what he was talking about and sure enough, there was a cloud in the shape of a smiley face. That took me by surprise, I didn't expect him to recognize shapes in the clouds yet, but what do I know. A little later he said the wind blew it away and he blew with his mouth. He's funny.

Don't Leave Your Kids In The Car

How many times do we have to read about children left in a car to die? What is the problem? How do you forget your kid? Why is this happening so often? Anyone who does that needs to be strapped in their car and left to die.

Reinstalled Windows XP

Since my hard drives death was imminent I bought a new one and installed it. The old one was about 10 gigs and the receipt said I bought it in 1999. I had forgotten that I reused the old hard drive when I built my computer. The new one is a Hitachi (IBM) 120 gig drive with 8 meg cache. (Which, BTW, cost less than the 10 gig drive in 1999) I dreaded reinstalling Windows because the first time had been hell. It took a few false starts and finally over 12 hours to install. I just went to bed and let it run to see if it would actually install. It never did work all that well either. Fast user switching would crash it every time and there were other little problems, not enough to say something is wrong with the computer but just enought to say Windows XP is really not that great. I had an early release of it meant for resellers and I just guessed that was the problem.

I installed the new hard drive and put in the Windows cd. It installed in about an hour or less. Amazing. It worked like I had never seen it before. It was unbelievable. Everything works like a charm, including fast user switching. There is only one small thing I want desperately to fix. When I sign in, the taskbar is slightly taller than it normally is, the icons in the taskbar are larger, and instead of just the time on the far right side it shows the time with the day under it. I can make it larger but it won't go any smaller. When Irma signs in the taskbar is completely normal. This is the way it was when first installed, I did not touch any settings. I haven't been able to figure it out but I'll keep looking on the web for an answer. Anyway, the computer is faster and better than ever. It did take a while to download the 40 megs of updates though. And my favorite programs.

I also can't remember how to change the double click to single click. I don't remember it being such a big deal previously, I think it was an easy thing to do, I just can't find the setting. I bought Disk Image 2002 so I can make an image of the drive and not have to go through all this again. It still amazes me that it works so well now after changing only the hard drive. Maybe Windows didn't like my other drive, I don't think it was bad when I first installed it. I installed Linux on it with no problem at all and it worked OK with XP for quite awhile, I just didn't know how much better it could have been.

Janet Reno?

We went to Sams Club today to pick up a few things and over by the meat area Irma pointed out a lady and told me it was Janet Reno. Yes, she was serious. "Irma, that is not Janet Reno!" Yes. "No, it isn't. No way." Two isles over she remembered it was the accountant of a previous employer.

That reminds me of the time (still in high school) I was with a friend (Jim) in his boat on the Tom's River in New Jersey. We were actually very near downtown Tom's River and he yells, all excited, "Look, a gorilla!" He's pointing at the docks. I didn't see a gorilla, but he was dead serious. When we got closer it turned out to be an old black guy fishing off the docks. That was funny.

Jim and I had a lot of laughs in those days. I was riding around with him and we decided to go to the Twin Lights in the Highlands. It was dark and they were closed but we were just driving around. We were in the area but didn't know the exact road. He turned left and we went up this super narrow, winding road way up the mountain. It was like a one way road and it kept going up and twisting and turning and he turned into someones driveway accidently. I couldn't stop laughing, it was so funny. He backed up and started driving again and a police car put it's lights on and stopped us. I was still laughing and the more I tried to be serious the more I would laugh. He got a ticket for making an illegal left turn. You can't make a left in NJ, you have to make three rights.

One time we went into Manhattan and drove around. He made a turn on 6th Ave and all these headlights were coming at us, we were going the wrong way. He backed up and around the corner and backed into a mailbox. That wasn't so funny, but we laughed anyway. We drove into Kearny, NJ and stopped at a Diner (I think it was Arlington actually) and ate and decided what we were going to do. The dent was small but obvious. I'm not going to say what we did, let's just say it wasn't legal. It got the dent fixed though.

It's been a long time since I've seen Jim but he's the kind of friend you just pick up where you left off when you meet again. Just continue the conversation.

Would Anyone Shoot An Unarmed Man?

It's shark week on the Discovery channel (as if you didn't know). There was a guy on tonight who feeds sharks by hand while snorkeling, no cage. They showed him get bit twice, once on the leg by a black tip and he got his finger nipped by a mako because he held on to the fish too long. The mako is one of the most dangerous sharks and shows no fear of man. This guy (I don't know his name) took a couple of people along to film his encounter with the mako. It was huge, he said about 500 pounds, and they got into trouble when they were down to the last fish to feed it. The shark started going after them, they had to control their fear and fend off the shark to make it back to the boat. It kept going for their legs, to incapacitate them, like they would bite the tail off a swordfish or tuna. He said the shark was just behaving naturally, turned on by the food, and wasn't looking for a fight. They eat whatever swims in the ocean and can't defend itself. If it thinks it will get hurt it will back off. (Shark week gets crazier every year, makes you wonder what they will show next year.)

Japan is debating going nuclear. This was previously unheard of.

It would be so wonderful if not taking up arms were the answer. I understand why the people of Japan are so against nuclear weapons. I've been to Hiroshima and I've seen what they preserved of that day and I've admired the beautiful city it is now.

Predators look for easy prey. They attack the weak, the unaware, the naive, the old, and the young. It doesn't matter if the predator is an animal or human, they go for the easy targets and they don't want to get hurt in the process. If you are strong and able to defend youself they tend to leave you alone, although misjudgements have been known to occur.

Japan will end up having to defend itself, it can no longer rely solely on the United States for protection. It's not in their best interest. There is so much lightning in Florida and I never hear about cattle being hit by it. (It hits people often enough though.) This happened in Virginia: Nine cows killed by lightning strike

I Wish I were There To See It

Her dog died and she wanted to send it back home by plane for burial. The airline workers at the receiving end thought the dog died in transit so they replaced it with an exact duplicate, hoping no one would notice. When she went to pick it up ... Woof!

"An airport spokesman told the paper: "No-one would have noticed the difference, except that her dog was dead and the new one was alive. I don't think she would ever have noticed. It was quite a surprise for her. When she spoke she didn't make any sense."

I almost don't believe this story. How could anyone think the dogs owner wouldn't notice just because it looked the same, what about the dogs personality? Maybe the Three Stooges are still alive.

This Is Sick

In the September 2003 issue of Mens Health magazine, on page 38, there is a list of contaminants that the FDA allows in packaged foods. I looked on the FDA website but could not find a similar list, instead the information looks like it is located here and there in the myriad of documents they have.

• Canned Mushrooms ..... 20 maggots or 75 mites per 3.5 oz can.
  
• Canned Pineapple ..... 20% rotten fruit per can.
  
• Cinnamon ..... 400 insect fragments or 11 rodent hairs per half c.
  
• Fig Bars ..... 5 insect heads per box.
  
• Ground Black Pepper ..... 475 insect fragments or 2 rodent hairs per 1/2 c.
  
• Macaroni Pasta .... 225 insect fragments or 4.5 rodent hairs per 7.5 oz uncooked.
  
• Peanut Butter ..... 30 insect fragments or 1 rodent hair per 3.5 oz.
  
• Popcorn ..... 1 pellet rodent excreta or 2 rodent hairs per lb.
  
• Potato Chips ..... 6% rotten potatoes per bag.

How do they figure this stuff out. Fig bars can have 5 insect heads per box? What about the rest of the insect, where did it go? What kind of insect? How do they know what's in there? Do they average the samples?

Tomato juice can have 5 fly eggs and 1 maggot per 3.5 oz? You can't strain out a maggot?

20 maggots or 75 mites in 3.5 ounces of mushrooms? There can be 20 maggots in that little can? Are they talking about the same maggots I think they are? What if there is a mix of maggots and mites? That seems like alot for 3.5 oz.

475 insect fragments or 2 rodent hairs in pepper, but 400 insect fragments or 11 rodent hairs in cinnamon? Why not make them the same? 400 is OK but 401 and you're shut down. It's someones job to count this stuff, too. I wonder how often? Only the government can make rules like these.

Failure Immenent

My windows computer has been acting up. Sometimes it doesn't recognize the hard drive at start up. When it does it gives this message: Failure predicted on primary master. Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard drive. A failure may be imminent.

At least it's warning me first. The thing is, it's really not that old, not more than two years.

Blogger Problems

I tried to blog yesterday and kept getting errors. That happened once before, I sure wish they'd fix that.

All Wet

It rained almost all day today. Hard. I drove to Melbourne and for about 20 miles could only go 35 mph because it was raining so hard. I could hardly see the road. I only saw one car driving with their flashers on but a few had no lights on at all. That's crazy. The thought of the day is: Get Rain-X.

All In

The other day on the Discovery channel they had a show about the moon. It was fascinating. They have different theories on how the moon came to be but they tend to think it was a part of the Earth that was broken off in a collision with another planet that no longer exists or another large chunk of space rock that hit the Earth. Over and over they said if this or that were only slightly different, the Earth would not be able to support life. If the collision wasn't just right, if the moon was larger or smaller, further away or closer, if the density were different, if it revolved around the Earth faster or slower ... any changes to any of these variables (and more) would mean life could not exist on Earth. There is life on this planet only by the slimmest of margins. It gets mind boggling to hear the scientists talk about this. They know how miraculous it is, they brag about it, they're amazed themselves at each step along the way where something happening differently would mean no life on this planet.

It all reminds me of poker. It's as if the Earth is playing poker with the universe. And since the beginning, billions of years ago, the Earth has been winning hand after hand after hand and each hand is played "all in." If it loses a hand - no life. So each hand, it bets it all, and it all rides on lady luck. ... It could happen. Yeah right.

Hiroshima

Nuclear weapons keep America free, that's the bottom line. Nuclear weapons keep other countries from attacking us. If we destroyed all of our nuclear weapons today we would be attacked tomorrow, by the truly evil countries with nuclear weapons. Our might coupled with our good nature has kept the relative peace in the world for many years. Now that nuclear technology is becoming available to less "good natured" countries the world is becoming a more dangerous place again. The difference is, they want to use them, we don't.

Notwithstanding what our money says, America does not trust God. We trust more in our own might and our (so-called) allies. But the U.S. is not willing to keep God's commandments and doesn't want God telling us what to do, we do it our way. That requires nuclear weapons. We don't worship nuclear weapons, we just trust them more to keep us safe.

After North Korea lobs a few more missles over Japan, the countries stance on nuclear weapons will change. Watch it happen. Neither the Japanese nor the Koreans have forgotten their history together, and a horrifying history it has been. On both sides.

I've been to Hiroshima and I've tolled the peace bell they have there, but all the good intentions in the world will not protect us from the very real evil that is out there. There is some more interesting discussion of Hiroshima here.

I saw a documentary last night on Korea and it said the goal of North Korea has always been and still is to reunite the north with the South. The Korean war was an attempt by Kim Jung Il's father to do just that. Now Kim Jung Il's number one goal is the same. That's funny, because all he has to do is stand down his army and welcome his southern brothers and the prosperity that will follow. The documentary was on the Discovery channel and it wasn't very good really. It made Carter and Clinton out as saviors and said Bush came along and ruined the U.S./North korean relations.

US troops and Iraqis Share Taste for Israeli Beer

I have a hard time believing American troops were drinking beer while laying siege to the house. Afterwards sure, but not on duty.

Water Works

The kids and I had a water fight yesterday. I just finished mowing the lawn and the kids had been playing out in the heat. We were ready. James loved it and put his bathing suit on later to go out and do it again. Afternoon thunderstorms put a stop to that idea. The kids played together nicely today, I was impressed.

Joshua is Back!

Joshua got back last night from his month long visit with his father. James was really excited to see him. They played nicely together for a while before I left for work. Tomorrow the fighting begins. I sure hope not but those two can fight like cats and dogs.

They finally picked up the Eurovan Sunday. That was a love/hate relationship. It was a great van, room for everyone plus, easy to drive, and comfortable but expensive to fix and often required special tools. Farewell.

NASCAR Revisited

I found this on the Neal Boortz website (Nealz Nuze, July 31), no link to back it up though.

No more money for Jackson’s Rainbow-Push coalition from NASCAR.  It seems that NASCAR is fed up with Jackson’s assertions that NASCAR is the “last bastion of white supremacy.”  Good news.  The better news is that Jackson’s star is falling.  More and more people and businesses are recognizing this race warlord as the shakedown artist he is.  As Jesse’s flame glows dim look for him to be more and more desperate to regain some semblance of credibility and power.  His time is over … let’s hope it stays over.

If it's true, all I can say is: good for them.
