Sicko

How sick was Ted Kennedy?

I didn't think it was possible for me to be more disgusted by the sick and twisted life of Ted Kennedy than I was based on what I knew at the time of his death.

I was wrong.

All Modern Societies Ration Health Care

Confessions of a Health Care Rationer

It’s a mistake to think of health care as a right. It is not a right; it is a good. Freedom of speech, by contrast, is a right, as is freedom of religious belief. They are privileges that inure to individuals as a consequence of the primordial right, free will. That is why we see them as inalienable. The exercise of these rights does not depend on any action of government, but rather on its inaction. Government may not legitimately interfere with their exercise, but nothing mandates that the government provide us with printing press or chapel.

Too important not to read.

What They Don't Want You to Know About the Economy

The Record of the Federal Reserve

* From 1776 to 1912 (136 years), the value of the dollar, relative to the Consumer Price Index, increased by 11%. A dollar could buy 11% more goods in 1912 than in 1776. Thus, if in 1776, you sat on your savings pile of $1,000,000 for 136 years, it would then be worth $1,110,000 in purchasing power (it will have appreciated in value by 11%). A loaf of bread for Thomas Jefferson cost the same as a loaf of bread for Lincoln 50 years later and again the same for J.P. Morgan 50 years after that.

* The United States Federal Reserve System was created in 1913. The stated purpose of the Fed, by the definition taken from its own website, is to "conduct the nation's monetary policy by influencing money and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of full employment and stable prices." Note that "stable prices" is another way of saying "stable dollar," they are two sides of the same coin (couldn't resist the pun).

* After the Fed's creation, from 1913 to 2008 (95 years), the value of the dollar, relative to the Consumer Price Index, decreased by 95%. A dollar could buy 95% fewer goods in 2008 than in 1913. Thus, if in 1913, you sat on your savings pile of $1,000,000 for 95 years, it would then be worth only $50,000 in purchasing power (it will have depreciated in value by 95%). One would now need to pay about 20X more than J.P. Morgan for one's bread. Ask my mother how much the price of milk has increased just in the last ten years alone.

Read through the whole article, it's not long.

Liberty is Our Natural State

Palin Flummoxes the Elites with Common Sense

Too often journalists and politicians attribute imperfections in American society to a failure of our founding principles, rather than recognizing problems as simply a natural byproduct of finite, flawed humanity that would crop up under any system. So we hear the cry that our health care system is “broken” and the conclusion that government must fix it immediately. It’s a naive notion promulgated by people who think history commenced with their own appearance on the planet.

Because humans fail the omniscience test and have a proclivity to misbehavior, we function best in a free market system where liberty permits escape from the inevitable outbreaks of ignorance and of the dark side of human nature.

Liberty is our natural state. Anything that encroaches on liberty, no matter how benevolent its proponents, must be resisted.

Read the whole thing, it explains the death panel label for those - and there seem to be a lot of them - who haven't connected the dots.

Give to your friends - that's Obama.

A controversy developed when it was revealed the Obama administration is willing to spend billions of dollars to fund offshore drilling in Brazil while blocking U.S. development of oil and natural gas resources by continuing environmental objections to opening U.S. offshore drilling, Jerome Corsi's Red Alert reports.

Underlying the controversy was the disclosure that Obama-supporter and billionaire hedge-fund manager George Soros bought a $811 million stake in Petroleo Brasileiro SA in the second quarter, making the Brazilian state-controlled oil company his investment fund's largest holding.

John McCain Town Hall Meeting

I have just been watching this and my first impression is that he is in over his head.

A New Push to Play God from Washington

Obama even gets away with saying things like having a system to "keep insurance companies honest"-- and many people may not see the painful irony in politicians trying to keep other people honest. Certainly most of the media are unlikely to point out this irony.

YOUR Future, and Your Children's

He's spending your future

Why be scared of a government health program? After all, the president says, "Medicare is a government program that works really well," and if "we're able to get something right like Medicare," we should have more "confidence" about being able to do it for everyone.

On the other hand, the president says, Medicare is "unsustainable" and "running out of money."

By the way, unlike your run-of-the-mill politician's contradictory statements, these weren't made a year or even a week apart, but during the same presidential speech in Portsmouth, N.H.

You should be afraid of what this plans to do.

"They pretend they are paying us and we pretend we are working,"

What Soviet Medicine Teaches Us

In 1918, the Soviet Union became the first country to promise universal "cradle-to-grave" healthcare coverage, to be accomplished through the complete socialization of medicine. The "right to health" became a "constitutional right" of Soviet citizens.

The proclaimed advantages of this system were that it would "reduce costs" and eliminate the "waste" that stemmed from "unnecessary duplication and parallelism" — i.e., competition.

These goals were similar to the ones declared by Mr. Obama and Ms. Pelosi — attractive and humane goals of universal coverage and low costs. What's not to like?

This is an absolute must read article.

Why do the deriders think we should cringe and be ashamed when they call us by an epithet that brings to mind our faithful allegiance to the truths upheld in America's great Declaration of Independence? I would rather be held up for ridicule as a 'birther' than identified with the 'deathers' who idolize Obama at the expense of truth and reason, offering themselves as the vanguard of the future of tyranny and human self-immolation he represents.

Someone needs to tell those people on the other side of the Potomac that to produce wealth, a nation needs to make stuff, mine stuff, drill for stuff, and grow stuff. Don’t inhibit those activities, but encourage them.

I can appreciate compassion but there are people who just need to be blotted out of existence, and this man is one of them. Letting this man not only live, but go free does much more harm than good. It does harm to the families of the victims, it does harm to Scotland, it does harm to what little stability and peace there is in the world, it even does harm to the people who support the terrorists because it further emboldens them to more destructive behavior - which will only lead to their eventual destruction.

Utterly Ludicrous

The Battle of the Bulb

For the EU, asking for the right to choose one's light bulb seems akin to the apocalypse. Less apocalyptic in the United States, perhaps, but both Europe and North America are bent on eradicating the incandescent and elevating the CFL. The arguments include stopping global warming (less energy per bulb, less energy use, fewer carbon emissions) and the simple goal of energy efficiency.

Yes, the incandescent light bulb produces more heat than light. And it is singled out for scorn by the energy-efficiency avant-garde. Does that mean it should be replaced only by CFL bulbs which government experts proclaim better? Those experts seem heavily influenced by Sylvania, GE, and Phillips, world leaders in the bulb business. As Tim Carney saliently observes, had Edison marketed his incandescents like "his 21st-Century heirs at General Electric, he would have lobbied Congress to outlaw candles in 1879" (fire hazard!).

Communists cry to media: 'We are people, too'

Communists, socialists and Marxists are sick of what they claim are recent "unfair media attacks, stereotyping and vicious slander" against their ideologies and have launched an online protest petition to news media officers entitled, "Communists are people, too."

Fine, no arguments, now stay out of our government which has a constitution which is decidedly NOT communist. If you can't handle living in a free society, move to a communist nation, you have several to choose from. If you want communist lite, you have many more.

You can be a communist and live freely in a free society, but no one can live freely in a communist society. You can live freely in America as a Muslim, but a non-Muslim cannot live freely in a Muslim nation. I'd argue no one can live freely in a Muslim nation, too, but if you are a male in full agreement with the laws you might do OK.

The world needs a bastion of freedom and America is it. This is the last stand.

Who most resembles 'Nazis'? - by Joseph Farah

While it may be an overstatement to compare Obama with Hitler, it is even more far-fetched to characterize his political opponents as Nazis and fascists because they very clearly want to limit the size and scope of government – preferring that people be free to govern themselves to the greatest extent possible.

I don't see anything in that article to disagree with, I have plainly seen the parallels for some time now. Facts is facts.

The socialists within want to take over By Hilmar von Campe

What links the enemies within and without is organized godlessness. The lies of the outside aggressors and of the inside helpers may have different purposes, but they are all anti-American. I had to face the fact that my personal lies and my personal immorality made me blind to the nature of the Nazis and their anti-God purpose. Hitler could use me and millions of others, making us morally co-responsible for his atrocities in which I had no part. Every American who loves this country has to face the same responsibility for his government. Christian bystanders were in Germany and are in America the most important helpers of totalitarian politicians. America needs a moral rebirth.

Quote of the Day

The Seriously Inconvenient Truth About Global Warming

Vox Day interviewed Ian Wishart, author of Air Con: The Seriously Inconvenient Truth About Global Warming, on August 9th, 2009.

If you look at the economic prize at stake, consider this. We currently have gold markets, but you are not forced to buy and sell gold and only a tiny percentage of the community are active in the gold markets. The financial markets are larger, but even then most of us are not forced to buy and sell shares or trade forex, and only a minority of us actually do so. But if carbon trading becomes compulsory worldwide, effectively every single one of us will be forced to buy and sell through this scheme. No one will be able to go through their daily lives without being represented directly or indirectly in the carbon markets. Those who control the carbon markets will effectively control the world.

If we are going to cede that kind of control, and money, for a claimed crisis of planetary proportions, shouldn’t we first be absolutely certain that the crisis is real?

Great interview, go read it.

Elephant learns to play the harmonica

The African elephant already loves music, but has found a new passion after a silver harmonica was accidentally left on the side of the enclosure.

She eventually got the hang of puffing out at the right time to produce a song, and now regularly places the instrument into her trunk and whiles away the afternoon playing a few tunes.

What kind of journalist posts an article on an elephant that plays a harmonica and doesn't have a video to view? Come on, man. How hard is that these days?

After much research and countless hours searching the internet (not really) I found that many elephants can and do play the harmonica, just not very well.

That may be very well for an elephant but no one is buying that download. So, in fact, this story is not even news and this illustrates why no one even likes journalists anymore.

Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine

Perspective

O Jehovah our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens!

Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have ordained strength, because of ones vexing You, to cause the enemy and the avenger to cease.

When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars which You have established;

what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man, that You visit him?

For You have made him lack a little from God, and have crowned him with glory and honor.

You made him rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet:

all sheep and oxen, yes, and the beasts of the field;

the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, and all that pass through the paths of the seas.

O Jehovah, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!

The Nation Healthcare Model

This is the Famous 'GREAT AND FREE HEALTHCARE' that Regular Cubans Receive

One of the greatest fallacies about the so called 'Cuban Revolution' has to do with healthcare.

Foreigners who visit Cuba, are fed the official line from Castro's propaganda machine: "All Cubans are now able to receive excellent healthcare, which is also free." But the truth is very different. Castro has built excellent health facilities for the use of foreigners, who pay with hard currency for those services.

Argentinean soccer star Maradona, for example, has traveled several times to Cuba to receive treatment to combat his drug addiction. But Cubans are not even allowed to visit those facilities. Cubans who require medical attention must go to other hospitals, that lack the most minimum requirements needed to take care of their patients.

In addition, most of these facilities are filthy and patients have to bring their own towels, bed sheets, pillows, or they would have to lay down on dirty bare mattresses stained with blood and other body fluids.

Why So Socialist?

How End-Users Suffer Under Socialism

Central planners announced this week that they were fresh out of money to buy toilet paper — yes, toilet paper — for the island's 9 million citizens. But not to worry. A nameless official for state-run monopoly Cimex and quoted by Reuters assured that "the corporation has taken all the steps so that at the end of the year there will be an important importation of toilet paper."

The predicament would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic. But toilet tissue is hardly the only item Cuba is lacking. Food itself is in short supply, with red bean and chickpea rations cut by a third, according to the Miami Herald. Special hard-currency-only stores for the elites have mysteriously failed to open after last week's "inventory," with no explanation given.

There's no gas, either. The Associated Press this week reported that state planners have decreed that oxen — yes, oxen — would replace tractors in the fields, a bid to conserve fuel. This, despite the fact that Cuba gets 100,000 barrels of oil a day from Hugo Chavez's Venezuela — effectively free, because Cuba never pays its bills.

But again, not to worry: Cuban socialists say the ox represents progress because it's so eco-friendly.

The Heart of the Matter

Untangling the Spaghetti

If "health care" were about health care, the devil would be in the details. But it's not about health or costs or coverage; it's about getting over the river and burning the bridge. It doesn’t matter what form of governmentalized health care gets passed as long as it passes. Once it’s in place, it will be "reformed", endlessly, but it will never be undone. Same with a lot of the other stuff: Keep throwing the spaghetti at the wall. The Republicans may pick off the odd strand but, if you keep it coming fast enough, by the end of Obama's first year the wall will be a great writhing mass of pasta entwined like copulating anacondas in some jungle simulacrum of Hef's grotto. And that’s a good image of how government will slither into every corner of your life: You can try and pull one of those spaghetti strings out but it'll be all tied up with a hundred others and you’ll never untangle them.

Instead of buying 8 new passenger jets at a cost of $550 million while they put the country in greater debt than ALL previous administrations, all members of Congress - since they support the "greening" of America and want to force Americans to give up their cars - must use either a bicycle or public transportation. At the most they can drive a Prius, if they buy it themselves.

Here's one of those anecdotal horror stories from Scotland's National Health Service that we are enjoined by American "reformers" to pay no heed to. From The Daily Record:

This is something everyone should read. What people should pay most attention to is the response of the health care officials. These are government employees and they react as you know government employees do - they take no responsibility whatsoever.

1. The family say they'll lodge an official complaint over "rude and dismissive" treatment Debra received at the hospital.

2. NHS 24 executive nurse director Eunice Muir said: "We can confirm Ms Beavers contacted NHS 24 and that her onward referral was managed safely and appropriately.

Ask yourself: How far do you think the family will get with their complaint? What makes you think it will be any different here, in America?

The White House buys Big Pharma’s silence

Drug Deals

Democrats are trying to explain opposition to ObamaCare as a sinister conspiracy controlled by the hidden hand of the health-care industry. Psychologists call this projection. Why bother with a new conspiracy when you’ve already clinched a secret deal with the President?

Part of the Obama health strategy has been to assiduously co-opt the key health "stakeholders," primarily with the leverage that legislation was inevitable so they might as well negotiate. Doctors, hospitals, insurers and the drug makers bought it—or perhaps it is more accurate to say were bought. This week it emerged that the pharmaceutical industry’s supposedly voluntary peace offering to cut drug costs by $80 billion to help finance ObamaCare was an explicit quid pro quo in exchange for White House protection.

A traitor, when he knows the thorough villainy and the blackness of his own heart, cannot help being astounded when he is forced to believe another man to be faithful. The first resort of a treacherous heart is to believe that all men would be just as treacherous, and are really so at bottom. The traitor thinks that all men are traitors like himself, or would be, if it paid them better than fidelity. --Charles Spurgeon

This may get ugly because the American people will not be intimidated into silence.

AARP Town Hall Meeting on Health Care

Watch this to the end. Look at the mobs!

The way they treat ordinary, concerned citizens is appalling!

One presenter says, "Insurance companies do not show $80 billion profit* (source please!) without denying health care."

The insurance companies make profit and the government steals profit. Insurance companies do not make their profit by denying care, although that does happen. Insurance is supposed to work by covering a large number of people, of which a much smaller number of people actually need it. Unfortunately, the government has so many regulations and rules about how they want it to work that it becomes impossibly complicated. Government needs to get out of the way and Americans need to stop relying so much on insurance, insurance should be for emergencies. Medical care costs are artificially inflated to the direct consumer because of the insurance mess, but everyone wants something for nothing.

Point #2 is the government can't provide health care for all Americans without denying health care. It's the same thing, only worse - there will be nowhere else to turn for help. This can be easily demonstrated by the examples of Great Britain, Canada, and anywhere else a single payer system is in place. What will you do? Go to Canada? Take the government to court? Good luck with that! You'll have to become a Congressman to avoid the public health care altogether.

But, I'm no expert. That's my opinion, worth price charged.

Very interesting.

Pythons Make Great Pets

Not all pythons are large, dangerous animals. Most are small to medium sized snakes that make great pets and are very beautiful and interesting.

The number 1 rule when buying any pet, as far as I am concerned, is don't get a pet to try to impress anyone. Most likely you will get in over your head real fast.

Number 2 would be learn all about the animal before you get it, and make sure you can safely take care of it for the rest of its life. That includes proper caging if required. That can be expensive.

Baby animals are cute but they grow fast. Can you handle the adult? Maybe a better question would be, do you want to handle the adult? You will have to feed and clean up after this animal for it's lifetime. Be honest with yourself and get your ego out of it. You don't always need the biggest and baddest.

This is a great video and I'm glad they made it. Check it out.

Americans Don't Make Good Communists

'Castroturfing' America - by Erik Rush

Most Americans – even if they did not support Obama for president – are not yet prepared to believe that he is telling lies of the magnitude that he indeed is telling about the health care reform bill; perhaps most do not believe he is capable of doing so, or that so many would stand idly by while such a calamity transpired. But that is just what is happening, and Obama's haste has been to ensure that as much of his agenda is manifested before too many do discover that he is essentially "Castroturfing" America.

Hey Look!

It's animatronic Obama! Look how the "evil" conservatives put words in his mouth that he would never say. The "lying, evil" conservatives are trying to ruin his presidency by "manufacturing anger" in the American people, and scaring them with made up nonsense that Obama never said, no matter how much video is out there to prove otherwise. It's all fantasy.

Members of Congress are like little kids who are putting their hands over their ears and shouting, "La, la, la, la, la!," so they don't hear the genuine - and it is genuine - concern and yes, anger over what the President and Congress are doing to this country.

And one more thing. Do we live in the U.S.S.R. now? The White House wants citizens to snitch on their neighbors who do not agree with the Obama administration.

This administration is worse than you thought.

Do Cows Snore?

I took our dog, Madison, out back earlier, around 10:30 pm. Since we live next to a pasture it is not unusual to hear horses or cows, even at night. But tonight, well, it was too dark to see but there was a cow not far from the fence line snoring away. I could even sense it was laying down, perhaps because of the direction of the sound. Maybe it was even dreaming because it would be loud and then softer and softer.

It was weird, I've lived here for years and never heard what I would consider snoring. Madison wanted to investigate but she's not allowed past the fence. I should have gotten a flashlight, but I had to go. I need to have a flashlight and a video camera ready for when things like this happen. You just never know.

Intellectual Frauds

Avoiding the Next Obama

My Igbo parents came to this great country from Nigeria. They arrived a few years after Nigeria's independence from Great Britain. In Nigeria, it was a time of unprecedented cultural and political turmoil, which allowed politicians very much like Barack Obama to continue to seep into Nigeria's political system. These politicians all promised a change from the past. And unfortunately, they ended up fulfilling their promises. What these politicians ended up changing was the very fabric of the African societies, which they had been taught to see as unsophisticated and inferior.

Socialist Government’s Astonishing Nearsightedness

The Tao Of The Clunker

Only the government is eager to sacrifice future wealth for immediate gain. It's written into the DNA of socialism. A businessman would think you a fool for suggesting he sacrifice decades of future opportunity for immediate gain, while a politician would think you a fool for suggesting otherwise. What matters to a politician more than today’s polls, and next year’s elections? A businessman looks at people who aren’t his customers yet, and sees the opportunity to expand his market. A politician looks at people who aren’t his constituents yet, and sees enemies that need to be suppressed. Politicians think they have an infinite supply of tax money to tap into, when their schemes go wrong. The deficit can always get a little bigger, and they can always steal a little more from the vastly outnumbered top income earners. Crashing the entire financial system for political gain in the 90s was a net win for the Democrats, and they would do it again in a heartbeat. Destroying the auto market to provide a little economic "stimulus" they can trumpet on the Sunday talk shows is a no-brainer.

What is Going on in Britain?

The Children’s Secretary set out £400million plans to put 20,000 problem families under 24-hour CCTV super-vision in their own homes.

They will be monitored to ensure that children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals.

Private security guards will also be sent round to carry out home checks, while parents will be given help to combat drug and alcohol addiction.

Taking the nanny state to a whole new level.

Says Mark Steyn:

And social decay in Britain (which is at least partly due to the nanny state's assumption of all adult responsibilities) is so advanced that almost everyone now thinks this perfectly normal.

Wow. What's next, sending problem families to retraining camps?

People, Get Ready

Your taxes are going up, up, up, up, up, up.

"Very important for everyone to understand, that we will not get this economy back on track, recovery will be not strong and sustained unless we can convince the American people that we're gonna have the will to bring these deficits down once recovery is firmly established."

Remember, it's all George Bush's fault, Congress is completely innocent, they were tricked, yeah, that's it, they were tricked. They weren't even there, Bush did it all when they were on vacation. Yeah, that's the ticket, they were all on vacation and George Bush snuck in and ruined the economy.

"Just requires the will to act." "Requires very hard choices." We do not have a choice as a country." We're gonna have to do what it takes, we're gonna do what's necessary.

Blah, blah, blah, spin, spin, lie, spin some more, lie, lie, blah, blah...

Give Me Freedom ...

Mark Steyn: No turning back from Obamacare

The president needs to get something passed. Anything. The details don't matter. Once it's in place, health care "reform" can be re-reformed endlessly. Indeed, you'll be surprised how little else we talk about. So, for example, public funding for abortions can be discarded now, and written in – as it surely will be by some judge – down the road. What matters is to ram it through, get it done, pass it now – in whatever form.

If this seems a perverse obsession for a nation with a weak economy, rising unemployment and a war on two fronts, it has a very sound strategic logic behind it. As I wrote in National Review a week or two back, health care is the fastest way to a permanent left-of-center political culture. That's its attraction for an ambitious president: It redefines the relationship between the citizen and the state in a way that hands all the advantages to statists – to those who believe government has a legitimate right to regulate human affairs in every particular.

Left: Deny, deny, deny.

Freedom is messy. In free societies, people will fall through the cracks – drink too much, eat too much, buy unaffordable homes, fail to make prudent provision for health care and much else. But the price of being relieved of all those tiresome choices by a benign paternal government is far too high.

Government health care would be wrong even if it "controlled costs." It's a liberty issue. I'd rather be free to choose, even if I make the wrong choices.

President Strangelove

I wasn't going to post anything more about this but I found this very interesting.

From Emmitt Till to Skip Gates

Where race is concerned, I sometimes think of the president as the Peter Sellers character in "Dr. Strangelove." Sellers plays a closet Nazi whose left arm—quite involuntarily—keeps springing up into the Heil Hitler salute. We see him in his wheelchair, his right arm—the good and decent arm—struggling to keep the Nazi arm down so that no one will know the truth of his inner life. These wrestling matches between the good and bad arms were hysterically funny.

When I saw Mr. Obama—with every escape route available to him—wade right into the Gates affair at the end of his health-care news conference, I knew that his demon arm had momentarily won out over his good arm. It broke completely free—into full salute—in the "acted stupidly" comment that he made in reference to the Cambridge police’s handling of the matter. Here was the implication that whites were such clumsy and incorrigible racists that even the most highly achieved blacks lived in constant peril of racial humiliation. This was a cultural narrative, a politics, and in the end it was a bigotry. It let white Americans see a president who doubted them.

Mr. Obama's "post-racialism" was a promise to operate outside of tired cultural narratives. But he has a demon arm of reflexive racialism—identity politics, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and now Skip Gates.

Cash for Clunkers?

This car is a clunker? Looks newer than mine.

And I know for a fact that car gets better than 20 mpg, so it doesn't even qualify for the program.

"So many customers were so close to qualifying," but their cars did not meet the government requirement of getting less than 18 miles per gallon,

What a waste. Stupid program, it's not being implemented correctly, dealers are taking cars that don't qualify and the customer will probably have to reimburse the cost of the program. They won't be able to get their car back.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

And check this out!

What next?

A Strong Woman Passes On

Former President Corazon Aquino, who swept away a dictator with a "people power" revolt and then sustained democracy by fighting off seven coup attempts in six years, died on Saturday, her son said. She was 76.

"Her courage, determination, and moral leadership are an inspiration to us all and exemplify the best in the Filipino nation,"

Rest in peace.
