This storm just won't leave. It's raining. There is not a lot of wind to speak of, at least not here on the outside edge of this thing. Imagine if this were a cat 4? I don't want to think about it. I didn't even have to put the potted plants in the garage, it never really got too bad. Just a lot of rain. It did clean the trees and bushes of all the spider webs and they look happy - if that's possible. The grass is growing. Even Madison is enjoying it, she puts her head up into the wind and seems to be smelling something very interesting. At least to a dog. I don't mind the rain really, because we aren't getting any kind of flooding from it at all, it's good sleeping weather and it's cooler. Brevard county residents may beg to differ, however. They got over 24 inches of rain so far.

Calm Before the Storm

It's a beautiful night as we wait for the arrival of tropical storm Fay. You wouldn't know there was a storm bearing down on us without the TV, radio or internet, it really is very calm. I put all the lawn furniture in the garage and got the potted plants ready to put in the garage - I don't want them flying around in the wind. The stores were crowded Sunday and Monday with people preparing for the storm or maybe for the first day of school. Perhaps a little of both. We're getting off easy this time, according to a local meteorologist:

"People will know there's a storm there," said Terry. "Winds will pick up as Fay moves through an area. People will feel it."

I, for one, am glad to hear it.

... the campaign is objecting to a statement by NBC's Andrea Mitchell on "Meet the Press" questioning whether McCain might have gotten a heads-up on some of the questions that were asked of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who was the first candidate to be interviewed Saturday night by Pastor Rick Warren at a presidential forum on faith.

Mitchell reported that some "Obama people" were suggesting "that McCain may not have been in the cone of silence and may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama. He seemed so well prepared."

McCain seemed well prepared because he was well prepared. He knows where he stands on the issues and he's not afraid to state them.

Obama, on the other hand, is trying to walk a tightrope, he doesn't want to say the wrong thing, he wants his answers to please everyone. He does well when his team can put together what he's supposed to say and he can regurgitate it.

Reaching the Tipping Point?

Responding to various new scientific reports questioning the concept of global warming, (New Jersey) Assemblyman Michael Doherty today called on Governor Corzine to hold off on proposing any new regulations associated with the state's Global Warming Response Act and urged the Legislature to repeal that act when it returns to legislative business after Labor Day.

"New Jersey's tax and regulatory climate is already chasing jobs from this state left and right and these new regulations will make matters worse," Doherty said. "Rather than conforming our policies to questionable scientific theories, we should be looking at the concrete economic indicators that show our state's economy is in trouble. And we should be taking steps to help people who are losing jobs and being forced out of their homes by this state's anti-economic growth agenda – not making matters worse."

I have to agree with Alan Keyes is on this issue.

The flaw in the "lesser of evils" arguments being used to promote John McCain and others like him is that even a lesser evil may be evil enough to kill. Such leaders are like the wound that took the life of Romeo's friend Mercutio: "not so deep as a well, or so wide as a church door; but 'tis enough, 'twill serve."

Alan Keyes is not crazy, as it seems some have successfully labeled him, he believes God. Believes Him, not just believes in Him. He seems to be closer to the mindset of our nations founding Fathers than anyone else in political life that I am aware of. What's wrong with that? I wish we had more like him.

Jersey Shore

I'm getting more traffic than I thought from the Barnegat Bay waterspout story. I wish I had seen it. I grew up just north of that area in Toms River and I don't remember ever hearing about something like that before, but I have seen some pretty heavy weather there. I remember fishing on the Toms River and watching rain like a wall of water, like a curtain, coming across the river. I thought it was the coolest thing.

I've also seen water spun up into a foot high waterspout dance across the water - on a clear day. No clue what caused that. I miss the Jersey shore, it was a fun place to grow up. Too bad New Jersey has such a screwed up government. It'll never be the same.

No choice but evil

Why Go To School At All?

Fed up with his students' complete inability to spell common English correctly, a British academic has suggested it may be time to accept "variant spellings" as legitimate.

Rather than grammarians getting in a huff about "argument" being spelled "arguement" or "opportunity" as "opertunity," why not accept anything that's phonetically (fonetickly anyone?) correct as long as it can be understood?

Obama Supporters For High Gas Prices

I say drill here, drill now regardless of the effect on the price of gas. Drill because the supply of foreign oil will be cut off one of these days because of war or terrorist attack, or who knows what. It's not a matter of if, but when, and we need to be prepared to supply our own needs in that case or the results will be catastrophic.

There are no alternatives to oil at this time, nothing can replace oil, nothing else is ready. We need to work on that, for sure, but we have to work with what is true, not what we wish were true.

I wish I could hop in my hydrogen powered or electric car to get to work, but it's not there.

NASA's Phoenix spacecraft has detected the presence of a chemically reactive salt in the Martian soil, a finding that if confirmed could make it less friendly to potential life than once believed.

I thought they were ready to announce they found the "potential for life" on Mars? They even briefed the President "about the discovery of something more 'provocative' than the discovery of water existing on the Martian surface."

I think they need to take a deep breath, calm down, and get their data sorted before they go off on a limb about something before they know for sure.

I don't think it will solve anything whether or not it gets thrown out and the best and fairest thing for all Canadians would be to disband the Human Rights Commissions entirely. This lawsuit, if taken up by the commission, can only lead further down a road you don't want to go.

The White House is Briefed: Phoenix About to Announce "Potential For Life" on Mars

It would appear that the US President has been briefed by Phoenix scientists about the discovery of something more "provocative" than the discovery of water existing on the Martian surface.

Why? It's certainly interesting and I can understand being excited by new discoveries, whether on our planets surface or out in space, but I fail to see why the President has to be briefed as if it is some kind of national emergency. Maybe they found where they buried Jimmy Hoffa, or Elvis is hiding in an underground bunker on Mars.

Unless they discovered that Mars is actually a Death Star - they need to stop being so dramatic. We are too influenced by Sci-Fi movies these days. It's probably just a microbe - discover it, kill it, dissect it, catalog it and write your peer-reviewed paper.

Am I being too hard on them? OK, you can jump up and down if you want, have a party, I don't care. I just don't get the whole top-secret brief the President crap.

Book Review: Banished: 'The Forsaken' by Tim Tzouliadis

This is a very sad book, the story of thousands of Americans who, during the Depression, lured by sham Soviet propaganda and pro-Soviet falsehoods spread by the likes of George Bernard Shaw and the corrupt New York Times Moscow correspondent, Walter Duranty, migrated to the USSR in search of jobs and a role in the "building of socialism."

The saddest part is those same falsehoods and propaganda are being taught to and believed by Americans today.

They came to Russia full of enthusiasm, bringing with them baseball and jazz, and eager to acclimatize. Russians found it difficult to believe the Americans' tales of woe when they saw their clothes, luxurious by Russian standards. And the migrants were themselves quite unprepared for the poverty and lawlessness which characterized life under Stalin, and in many if not most cases decided to leave.

On the surface socialism sounds so fair, so right, but it corrupts the soul, it destroys our humanity, it steals our self-worth - it's a lie through and through.

And yet, half this country will vote for it. Half. It's crazy. Perhaps it's popular because it seems to be the shortcut to glory. The easy way live comfortably - why struggle when you can have it handed to you?

One of the devil's suggestions was that the King should take the shortcut to the Kingdom - I will give thee all the kingdoms of the world for one moment's homage, a shortcut to the kingdom, the shortest way! Would it have been the shortest way? Would He have ever gained the kingdom so? Was not the lie of evil insidious in that it suggested as the shortest way the way that never reached the goal at all? Socialism, in any of it's many forms, doesn't work, never did, never will. Man was meant to work for his sustenance, to overcome adversity, to give voluntarily. There is no satisfaction in obtaining that which was not earned, there is only a yearning for more. Taking away the incentive for hard work, for gain, for giving - for living - leaves only poverty. Poverty of the economy and poverty of the soul.

The horror that was Stalinist Russia is still incomprehensible to many Americans, even to many of those who study the USSR professionally. Reading this book is certain to open their eyes.

Even if there were any evidence beyond the IPCC’s faulty modelling to demonstrate that humans are responsible for global warming - which the last decade’s weather would indicate has stalled or even reversed - it should be noted that Australia is responsible for approximately 1.3 per cent of the total anthropogenic global emissions.

The 18 nations ranked ahead of Australia (the European Union is shown as one) by CO2 emissions account for 89 per cent of the total.

Sydney University's Professor Tom Hubble explained in 2005: "Natural climate change, of similar and greater size as that projected for anthropogenic greenhouse warming, has occurred many times during the last million years and as far as we can tell throughout the history of the planet."

No, get the gun before you need it. That's better than having a fox stuck on your leg for 3 days. Oh, and kinda know how to use a gun better than that guy, his wife is never gonna let him forget he shot her in the leg. Nope.

One more point: another reason given for cancelling was:

Then, in his speech in Berlin he says:

He can give a speech as a citizen but he can't visit wounded troops as a citizen?

Obama had already qualified the statement the day after he made it, but in a new CNN interview he effectively retracted it, blaming "poor phrasing" and careless syntax.

In an election campaign in which not only young liberals, but also some people who are neither young nor liberals, seem absolutely mesmerized by the skilled rhetoric of Barack Obama, facts have receded even further into the background than usual.

As the hypnotic mantra of "change" is repeated endlessly, few people even raise the question of whether what few specifics we hear represent any real change, much less a change for the better.

Raising taxes, increasing government spending and demonizing business? That is straight out of the New Deal of the 1930s.

Thoughts on Obamas Speech to Hispanics

This post inspired by this video of Barack Obama giving a speech to Hispanics. I took the quotes from this transcript, though. Not an exact match, but close.

It's about making sure that we have a government that knows that a problem facing any American is a problem facing all Americans.

As all Americans are free to choose how they live there lives, they are also accountable for the consequences of those choices. That is freedom. No American should be obligated, save by their Creator, to try to fix the problems of those who consistently choose wrong. Set the example, show them the right path, but if they continue to choose wrong, that is their choice. Government co-dependency and enabler programs do not help except to prolong or worsen the problem. It is not the governments right to take our money and give it to people who refuse to help themselves.

It's about making sure our government knows that when there's a Hispanic girl stuck in a crumbling school who graduates without learning to read or doesn't graduate at all, that isn't just a Hispanic-American problem, that's an American problem.

That is an American problem, and it's not a problem only for Hispanics. Our government screwels schools are not doing the job. Somewhere along the way - about the time they started embracing socialist ideas - reading, writing and arithmetic became passe and government schools became socialist indoctrination centers. Now we're more concerned with how our students feel. We don't want anyone to feel inadequate so the teaching is dumbed-down so everyone passes - there are no failures. Everyone feels good about themselves. Well, until they graduate, anyway. Solution? Well, let's start with vouchers, but we need a complete overhaul or government out of the teaching business.

When Hispanics lose their jobs faster than almost anybody else, or work jobs that pay less, and come with fewer benefits than almost anybody else, that isn't a Hispanic-American problem, that's an American problem.

Hmm. Are we talking about Hispanics or about illegal immigrants? Hispanics in general seem to be doing pretty good in my neighborhood, even if they don't speak much English. If they speak English fluently, the skies the limit. You start running into problems at the good choices/bad choices line, but that is the same for everyone.

It sounds to me like he is talking about illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants work jobs for less pay and have fewer benefits, yes, of course. That's the life you choose when you enter a country illegally. Even so, they are doing much better than they would be if they stayed in their country of origin. That's why they are here, it wouldn't be worth it otherwise.

Is that an American problem? Well, by not enforcing our laws we have let it become one. The problem needs to be solved in the countries from which they come, the failure is there. It is not an easy problem to solve as the culture of corruption is deeply embedded in, for instance, Mexico. Letting the people continually spill over into America illegally is enabling the problem. Bringing that culture to America and allowing it to overcome our own is not going to help them or us.

When 12 million people live in hiding in this country and hundreds of thousands of people cross our borders illegally each year; when companies hire undocumented workers instead of legal citizens to avoid paying overtime or to avoid a union; and a nursing mother is torn away from her baby by an immigration raid, that is a problem that all of us - black, white, and brown - must solve as one nation.

That is a failure of the country of origin first, and a failure of our country to enforce it's laws. You can't stop it all but it has been allowed to get way out of hand. Companies hiring illegal immigrants? Only if it doesn't cost them more than they get out of it. Fine them or jail them if necessary, and enforce it. That will stop it. If there are no jobs the hundreds of thousands crossing becomes a trickle.

There are those who say we need illegals to do the jobs Americans won't do. Well, those jobs don't pay much of anything and if you want to make the illegals legal and give them benefits, decent pay and overtime, they will be pricing themselves right out of a job. Or the companies will have to raise the price of what they are selling. Or perhaps both.

You are seeing a personality cult develop in pretty much full swing before your eyes, if you are not blinded by it. That paragraph describes Obama to a T.

Still, this has got to be a joke or just something Germany's version of Dennis Kucinich dreamed up. It can't have a chance of passing.

If the bill gets adopted, babies will have the same powers to voice their opinion on government handling of macro-economic performance in a global downturn enjoyed by their parents.

Toddlers will be able to take a stand on issues such as whether German armed forces should be deployed abroad.
